Driving Dairy Performance with Maxammon Maize

Driving Dairy Performance with Maxammon Maize: The Carsewalloch Story

At Carsewalloch Farm in southwest Scotland, the Campbell family have embraced innovation and seen real results in the process. The farm, run by Alan and Jane Campbell, with son Ross now stepping forward as a driving force, has introduced Maxammon cereals into their new robotic dairy setup with outstanding success.

With 240 Holstein Friesian cows calving all year round and milked through four Lely A5 Astronaut robots installed in May 2024, the Campbells have been feeding a Maxammon maize and barley mix as part of their partial mixed ration (PMR) for the past ten months and the performance gains have been clear.

“The Maxammon maize meal has been the single best concentrate we’ve used to drive milk production. It’s made a real difference,” says Ross Campbell.

Since switching in October 2024, yields have climbed steadily from 26 litres per cow per day to 38 litres by spring, alongside 4.5% fat and 3.5% protein, a remarkable improvement in under a year.

Ross credits the rise to the rumen-friendly nature of Maxammon cereals stating, “The cows body condition has improved majorly and there is much better shine to the cows’ skins. Due to the Maxammon cereals being rumen friendly the cereals can be fed at a much higher rate.” This has allowed the farm to increase cereal levels in the ration without upsetting cow health or consistency.

Ground maize is treated with our unique soya-free alkaline grain treatment, Maxammon, which brings significant nutritional value, with a crude protein content of 18.8% on a dry matter basis. This high protein level has allowed the Campbells to reduce reliance on other bought-in protein sources. This is a particularly valuable benefit in a year when sourcing draff and dark grains has been a challenge.

Implementing Maxammon cereals was straightforward, thanks in part to close support from Arol Hyslop, Harbro Dairy Sales Specialist.

“Arol set realistic targets with us. We aimed for a 2-litre increase, and that’s exactly how it’s gone. You don’t get instant results, but the steady progress proves it’s working.”

Alongside Maxammon cereals, the Campbells also feed other Harbro products in the ration. This includes DairyPlus Robot 18 compound and a bespoke dairy meal designed to complement the forage and cereal mix. The combination is carefully balanced to support cow health and robot performance.

Ross is a keen young farmer with a clear eye on future investment, herd health, and the broader dairy industry. His parents Alan and Jane have created a strong foundation at Carsewalloch, and Ross is building on it with energy and ambition.

Looking ahead, Ross sees Maxammon maize and barley as a permanent fixture in the ration. “We’ll keep using the Maxammon maize meal for the foreseeable future. The overall nutritional advice has helped the herds performance physically and financially with margins improved.” He has even given some advice to fellow dairy farmers, “Maxammon maize is worth trying as you can feed higher amounts of cereal to drive milk yield compared to conventional cereals used in the past.”
