Get Set
for Tupping

With tupping season just around the corner, a little preparation now can help maximise fertility and impact scanning rates, lambing percentages and flock performance. Here are some top tips from our Regional Manager, Jane Moodie.

3 Steps for a Successful Tupping

1. Pre-Tupping Health Check

Carrying out a health check on both ewes and tups can help prepare for the season ahead and identify any issues early. Remember, one sub-fertile ram can affect a large number of ewes, so a careful examination is well worthwhile.

Ewes

Body Condition Scoring
Feet checked and treated if required
Teeth checked
Udders examined for lumps, hardness or abnormalities
General health and mobility assessed

Rams

Body Condition Scoring
Feet checked and treated as required
Teeth checked
Testicles examined for size, firmness and any abnormalities
Fit, active and ready for work

2. Review your Minerals and Trace Element programme

Fertility starts long before the ram goes in. Ensuring sheep receive the correct balance of minerals and trace elements can support reproductive performance and help maximise conception rates. If you’re unsure what your flock requires, seek advice before applying supplementation.

Depending on your flock’s requirements, consider:
Long-acting mineral boluses
Mineral drenches
Harbro Feet & Fertility buckets

3. Stock up on the essentials – your Tupping time checklist.

Using harnesses, crayons and marking products allows you to identify served ewes, monitor ram activity and estimate lambing dates more accurately.
